Mavs blog is reporting that Vince Carter is trying to get their fans to forget all about that other headband-wearing swing guard that used to come off the bench for them. In fact, Vince's super-cool response when asked about him taking on the sixth-man role occupied by the Jet for the past eight years?
“I’m down for it,”
From a fantasy standpoint, Vince is obviously no longer the 20+ ppg, >5 trb, >5 ast, >5 ftm, > 1.5 3pm contributer he once was as a New Jersey (RIP) Net.With nagging injuries hampering his once other-worldly athleticism, Vince had his lowest averages across the board as a Maverick last year. He may reinvent himself now that he's accepted this niche role, but don't expect his fantasy stock to increase any. However, if you are in need of a bench player to hit a couple threes per game and/or grab a steal, he can probably fill that void.
For the Mavericks, Vince could replace Jason Terry in bringing instant offense as a spot-up shooter who still has some crafty moves around the basket. However, he probably will not bring a lot of value to most fantasy teams in competitive leagues.
It's a cruel aspect of fantasy basketball that just because you used to jump up and down on the couch mimicking their Inside Stuff highlights, you are not obligated to any type of devotion to these guys. Don't let those fuzzy memories of players who you grew up admiring cloud your judgement of their fantasy production today (See Ray Allen and Jason Kidd)
